Garden report: A little uneven

Things are going reasonably well in the garden, but not everything is going at the same pace.

Two tomato plants have shot up and are producing fruit.  The other six are kind of so-so.  The peppers aren't growing well, either, though a couple are trying to produce fruit.

The beans are flowering, and the eggplant looks like it will be setting fruit very soon.

The herbs are doing nicely ... though there is the problem with the worms that attacked my kale ...

Perhaps it's the odd weather that's affecting growth ... it's been cool and rainy for most of June, though the heat certainly has come on in the past couple of weeks.

Today's tip: My bright idea

It's nice to have a bit of light sometimes ... like when I'm trying to find the  lock to the front door at night, or trying not to fall down the stairs at the movie theater.

I looked into the flashlight apps for phones ... the free ones didn't get good reviews.  I wasn't keen about buying one.

Then I noticed one of the descriptions: " produces a white screen..."

Hm mm.  My phone allows more than one home screen.   And one of the backgrounds is a white screen.

Bingo!  I just loaded the white screen onto home screen No. 2.  A quick swipe, and I have a do-it-yourself flashlight.  It may not be quite as bright, but it doesn't have to be.

Exploding dishes

Had a rather scary thing happen yesterday.

I was baking fish for dinner in my glass baking dish, and prepared to pull out said  dish so I could turn the fillets over.

When I picked up the dish,  it literally fell apart!   Half the dish came up in my hand .. the other half (with the fish) dropped back into the oven and shattered!

What a mess!   Glass all over the oven and  the kitchen floor!   Dinner was obviously ruined. (Fish bones are one thing, glass shards ... no thanks.)

Not sure what happened here.  It was an older dish, so perhaps they eventually give out.  (I lost another baking dish last year ... though not in such a spectacular matter.)

So, I'll be in the market for a new baking dish or two ... perhaps one in silicone?

Menu Monday: Salmon pasta

Haven't done this for a while ...

Got a deal on salmon in the pouch, and adapted a recipe I found.

8 ounces spaghetti
¼ cup olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 pouches (2.5 oz) of skinless, boneless salmon
3 Roma tomatoes, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh chopped basil
Salt and pepper to taste.
Cook the pasta until it is slightly firm to the bite.  Drain well, but reserve 1 cup of the water.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic until onions are soft.  Add tomatoes and cook until they soften. Add salt and pepper. Add salmon and cook until warmed through.
Add spaghetti and basil.   If mixture seems too dry, stir in some of the pasta water. Also a good time to add more salt and pepper if needed.
Sprinkle with parmesan cheese before serving if desired.

Sewing projects

Sheesh .. Blogger is being very bad today .... it's been a pain trying to post.

Anyway ... Over the years, I've been ask to lend my sewing skills (such as they are) to some odd repair projects.

One year, I was asked to mend the covers of the balloon chest protectors that the youth baseball league keeps on  hand.  (If you don't know what I'm talking about .. look at old baseball game photos.  You'll see the plate umpire using one like a shield .  Nowadays, the protectors are small and light enough to wear inside a shirt.  But the league keeps a few on hand in case someone needs to be drafted...)

This year, I had to replace a zipper ... in a lawn blower/vacuum bag!   These things, which are not exactly cheap, aren't made very well, it seems.  This one popped after about a year of service.

For starters, this thing got the cleaning of its life.  No way was it going near my sewing machine until it was grass- and dust-free.
Then I had to figure out a zipper.  The original was a 44 inch single pull that went all the way around the bag.  No idea where to find one ... so I made do with a 22-inch dress zipper and MacGyvered it in.  (It doesn't match, but I found it in my sewing stash, so free wins out.)

So ... it's fixed.  Hasn't been used yet, so I have no idea if it will work .. or for how long.  On the other hand, I do have another zipper in the stash....

How's that?

I recently got a $10 rebate for buying some of from a large multi-product company's goods.  It arrived as a debit card, which I'm not crazy about, but that's not what caught my eye.

It was a notice with the receipt that "Not intended to use with (company's) products."

So ... I'm not supposed to use the $ you gave me to buy more of your products?

OK, then ... I took it to the drugstore and bought a competitor's products.

     So there ...  ;)
