Time to plant

It's finally gardening time at the casa de chaos! (ask me in August if I'm still this happy about it;)

I've planted lettuce and some greens, basil and cilantro. (I'm still on the lookout for thyme seeds.)
I grow lettuce in large pots -- after more than a decade of dumping topsoil, etc., in the garden, the soil still has too much clay to grow lettuce well. And, it keeps it out of the bunnies' reach.

To keep costs down, I keep the potting soil from last year's plantings, usually adding a small bag to freshen things up.

I also spruce up my clay pots with a coat of spray paint. I started doing that when the pots began looking beat up. Of course, the drawback is that they have to be repainted every year, LOL! I find the color unifies them -- no one notices that they're different sizes.

Free chicken

Check your newspaper's Sunday magazine for a pullout coupon good for 1 free piece of KFC's new grilled chicken. The free piece is the manager's choice, so who knows what you'll get -- but maybe it will be enough for a light lunch, eh?

Musings ....

Looks like I've sent in my last rebate on Wag's Easy Saver program. April apparently was the last month for the program. Too bad, I'll miss all the FAR goodies every month. I don't know if I want to go whole-hog with their register rewards program. I have enough trouble trying to figure out the CVS program sometimes. ...

We resume our regular blogging

Hello!
I'm back -- with a hopefully clean computer.

We still don't know what kind of computer virus that was, but it certainly played havoc with the system .. and my wallet.

Actually it was one of those weeks that kick you right in the emergency fund. Besides the computer, we had to deal with major car repairs and a lawnmower that literally fell apart.

But there were some blessings, too. A big purchase we'd made a while back didn't work out, so we received a refund. We're also due a rebate for some car parts

So things tend to even out .. but I'd like to stop propping up the economy for a while!

Technical difficulties

I've been a bit sporadic about posting the past couple of weeks, and will continue to be ... my main computer caught a bug -- a very nasty bug that's going to take some drastic measures to cure. And more $$ than I expected.

It is frustrating to think that I've done what I'm supposed to do - keep the anti-virus software updated, run the anti-malware programs, and bugs still get in! I suppose I shall have to be even more vigilant about where I roam in the internets!

Hopefully, by next week, things will be back to normal!

Free paper products (maybe) and cheap broth

Check last Sunday's Smart Source (the "green" insert. I'm using a Central Indiana ad) for a coupon for a free Marcal Small Steps product. It's good on a single roll of TP, a box of facial tissue or a regular roll of paper towels.

The catch: it's only free up to $1. After that, it's $1 off.

The other catch is that you actually have to find one of the products in the correct size. I've struck out so far (just finding multi-roll packs). But hey, there are plenty more stores to check.

For those of you who have Meijer stores (again, I'm using a Central Indiana ad), there's a deal on Swanson's chicken broth. It's on sale, 3 for $2, and the 3/29 SS has a coupon for 40 cents off on 3. Since Meijer doubles coupons, it will be 80 cents off 3, for a total of 40 cents a can.

Things that make you go hmmmm

Today's question:

Why is it that when no one in the house is sick, I get all kinds of "get $XX gift card for new or transferred prescription" offers. But the minute someone does get sick, all the offers have expired, and no new ones are available?

Doin' the ECB math

Things to ponder while I'm looking at the CVS ad...

Should I take my $2 in ECBs bucks and:
  • Combine them with coupons and spend $1.24 to get a tube of toothpaste, a bottle of Excedrin and $2 in new ECBs
  • Combine them with coupons to get 2 bottles of Excedrin for free, and get no ECBs.
  • Combine them with coupons and pay $11.22 to get 2 bottles of mouthwash, 1 tube of toothpaste, a bottle of Excedrin and $10 in ECBs. Then use the mouthwash rebate to get another $10 back.

Tax time

I've spent most of the evening dealing with the annual income tax headache ... er, computations. I'm not an early filer, mostly because we usually end up owing -- and deficit or not -- I'm not willing to cough up the $$ any earlier than I have to, LOL!

One comfort: The bill isn't near as bad as last year's.

Also on the financial front, we're looking for a new bank. Ours was sold, and the new bank's rates are well, awful. Unfortunately, switching banks has gotten more complicated, what with online bill payments and direct deposit. And this bank is very convenient.

But in my humble view, good financial stewardship means trying to get the best return on my family's savings -- even if it means some inconvenience. We work too darn hard to get the $$ and to save it. I want it working for us, too.
