Self-serve blues: Update
I promised I would tell everyone how I came out with the $3 coupon I didn't get. Went back to the store and talked with the manager. She remembered our conversation and immediately had the customer service clerk give me a $3 cash refund. So, all's well. And of course I spent it, and a bit more, LOL!
